This latest release by Grand Records captures the legendary Dr Feelgood at the peak of their powers. These recordings were made by the BBC and originally broadcast on Radio One. Until now they've remained in the BBC archives. Both concert recordings featured on this album have been digitally re-mastered making this an essential purchase for Dr Feelgood fans as well as fans og guitar-driven rhythm 'n' blues.
Having survived the punk explosion and the acrimonious split with guitarist Wilko Johnson Dr Feelgood set about consolidating their position as the UK's most exciting live band. Wilko's replacement was the then unknown Gypie Mayo. He wasn't unknown for long. His impact on the band was enormous as the 22 tracks on this CD show. Gypie's arrival heralded the beginning of a new more commercial successful era for the band for the band as highlighted by the singles "Milk & Alcohol" and "Down at the Doctors" (live versions of both these Feelgood anthems are included on this CD).

Gypie's guitar heroics proved the perfect foil for the howling and growling of frontman Lee Brilleaux. Mix some blues standards and soul classics with band originals and you have a potion that only Dr Feelgood could come up with.

Wilko Johnson - Back in the Night - The Best Of ... 2002

From Canvey Island in Essex, Johnson played in several local groups before moving to the University of Newcastle upon Tyne to study English. Returning to Essex, he played with the Pigboy Charlie Band, which evolved into Dr. Feelgood – a mainstay of the 1970s 'pub rock' movement.
Johnson developed his own unique style, coupling a choppy guitar style with a novel dress sense (he favoured a black suit and a 'pudding bowl' haircut) and jerky movements.
It should be noted that Johnson's unique, highly percussive guitar style, was due to the fact that he did not use a pick in his right hand, something that enabled him to do rhythm and play riffs or solos at the same time. Such a style - which also made it easier to move around abruptly on stage with the jerky movements of an automaton without the fear of losing his pick - was probably derived, at least in part, from blues-oriented American fingerstyle guitar. Wilko himself describes how the style evolved from an attempt to copy the style of Mick Green of Johnny Kidd and The Pirates, a guitarist he admired enormously.
He maintained this style even after leaving Dr. Feelgood, a step that meant he missed out on Feelgood’s greatest UK success, the punk-tinged Top 10 single "Milk and Alcohol", although he was still with Dr. Feelgood when their live LP, Stupidity, reached number one in the UK Albums Chart.
In 1977, he was a founding member of the Solid Senders, and a couple of years later joined Ian Dury’s band, The Blockheads. He then formed the Wilko Johnson Band, joined by Blockhead bassist Norman Watt-Roy and drummer Salvatore Ramundo. Ramundo was later replaced by Steve Monti (former Curve and The Jesus and Mary Chain drummer).
The Wilko Johnson band still play on the pub circuit.

The Flamin' Groovies - Now - 1978

"Flamin' Groovies Now!" is an album of more British Invasion tracks. The sound on this record, produced and engineered by Dave Edmunds, was a notable improvement over "Shake Some Action", and the group had lost none of its flair for the period or the style, though there was also precious little new ground covered. The range of styles embraced on this record was astonishing -"Between the Lines" and "Take Me Back," and especially "Good Laugh Mun" were examples of Edmunds emulating Phil Spector, and had the Groovies sounding like the Beach Boys of "Don't Worry Baby" and recalled the way the early Kinks covered American music; "House of Blue Lights" gave nods to both Merrill Moore and Chuck Berry, as well as the Stones. The songs off of side two were harder, giving them more the kind of edge one associated with the Stones or the Rockin' Vickers. But their version of Gene Clark's "Feel a Whole Lot Better" was the crowning achievement on this record, the best contemporary cover of a Byrds track ever done.

The Creepers - Rock'n'roll Liquorice Flavor - 1987

The Creepers successfully toyed with any musical style that grabbed their fancy, whilst always baring their obstructive and uncompromising traits. The band were renowned and remembered as a rare concoction of wit, healthy cynicism, intelligence and vitriol.

The band was established in Manchester in 1983 by Marc Riley following his departure from The Fall.

Embarking on a recording career and releasing 2 singles, Favourite Sister and Jumper Clown under his own name, Marc Riley became Marc Riley and the Creepers, under which moniker the band released a further 3 singles, Creeping at Maida Vale EP, Shadow Figure EP, and 4 A's from Maida Vale EP (all three were 4 track 12 recordings from John Peel BBC Radio 1 sessions) and 2 studio LP's, Gross Out and Fancy Meeting God! until his indispensable contribution was beyond dispute and he dropped himself (in name only) to record as The Creepers.

The band then released their most successful single to date, a cover of Enos' Babys on Fire followed by their third studio LP Miserable Sinners. This was their last release for In Tape Records and they subsequently signed to Red Rhino Records in the UK and released the single Brute before recording what was to be their last studio LP Rock n Roll Liquorice Flavour. The decision to disband the group was taken by Marc Riley at the end of 1987 before the release of the LP, in the knowledge that they had recorded their finest work, since Riley felt the bands diverse and prolific recordings under two Creeper line-ups had gone as far as he wanted to take it and as far as a world audience would accept any further possible change in musical direction.

The real cover of the vinyl is impossible to scan: entirely white with the band and record names in relief.

Urban Dogs - 1983

Started in 1982 by CHARLIE HARPER of the UK SUBS to play the 100 CLUB because the UK SUBS wouldn't (they felt they shouldn't play there more than once a year because of their "pop star status"). The first main line-up of the band comprised of CHARLIE HARPER (UK SUBS - vocals/harmonica), KNOX (VIBRATORS -guitar) whom Charlie had met at a party, ALVIN GIBBS (UK SUBS - bass), and MATTHEW BEST (drums). The band had a pretty amateur approach to playing, taking the drums around in a car, and lugging the gear in to the 100 CLUB (where the band played regularly enough to almost be the house band) in front of often quite good crowds. The band did various gigs and under the management of Richard Bishop the band made an album for Fallout Records in 1983 called "URBAN DOGS", recorded at Silo Studios, west London. The album reached number 7 in the Indie charts in April 1983.

The Pop Rivets - Empty Sounds From Anarchy Ranch - 1979

Canterbury, England's Pop Rivets (originally the Pop Rivits) played noisy, amateurish mod-garage punk and are perhaps most notable for launching the career of D.I.Y. aficionado Billy Childish. The rest of the band featured guitarist Will Power, bassist Russell Square, and a succession of drummers beginning with Valentine Lax on their self-released, self-titled debut EP and first LP, 1979's The Pop Rivits' Greatest Hits (later reissued as The Original First Album). The same year's Empty Sounds From Anarchy Ranch welcomed drummer "Li'l Russ" Wilkins, who was later replaced by Bruce Brand. The Rivets broke up in the midst of a tour, and Childish and Brand quickly joined the Milkshakes, a band formed by Rivets roadies Mickey Hampshire (guitar) and Banana Bertie (bass) to open for the Rivets. Childish would go on to a prolific career, both solo and with various outfits that often included Brand.

Formed in 1981, the Lords of the New Church had a formidable intercontinental punk rock pedigree. Singer Stiv Bator and guitarist Brian James were founding members of Cleveland's Dead Boys and London's the Damned, respectively, both successful and influential punk pioneers. Bassist Dave Tregunna and drummer Nicky Turner were veterans of Sham 69 and the Barracudas.

This vinyl EP includes a extended version of their cover of "live for today" and two great previously unreleased tracks.

The Cherry Bombz - Hot Girls In Love - EP - 1986

The 1st vinyl EP of this great glam rock band (only 2 studio vinyl EPs were out). Formed in 1985 by Andy McCoy after the disbanding of Hanoi Rocks.

Original band members: Andy McCoy (ex-Hanoi Rocks), Nasty Suicide (ex-Hanoi Rocks), Terry Chimes (ex-Clash), Anita Chellamah (ex-Toto Coelo) and Timo Caltio (ex-Hanoi Rocks).

Prior to commencing work on thier first single Dave Tregunna replaced Timo.They released two 12 inch singles in 1986 and 87, which did extremely well on the UK's Indy charts. This was followed by a live debut album and a live video called Hot girls in love. Shortly after that Chellamah was sacked. By 1988 the Cherry Bombz disbanded.

Amebix - No Sanctuary - 12" - 1983

Amebix, formed in England in 1978 as "The Band with No Name", were a band that many consider to have started the sub genre crust punk. Their music, heavily influenced by Motörhead (and to a lesser extent Lemmy-era Hawkwind), Black Sabbath, Venom, and early Killing Joke, combined with an ethos and worldview akin to Crass, represented their non-traditional lifestyles.

Their music blended hardcore punk and heavy metal into a form of early thrash metal. They were the forerunners of crust punk and a thrash metal pioneer. Such notable bands as Sepultura, Neurosis, Napalm Death, and Deviated Instinct have paid homage to the band.

This is one of their very first release.

The Depressions - 1978

Originally a Who / Small Faces cover band from Brighton called Tonge. With the onset of punk they turned into the Depressions. All of them had dyed blonde hair and the bassist singer had an eyepatch for some reason. (The Police later nicked this image minus the eyepatch!!!). No buzzsaw drone for these boys more a punkier Eddie & The Hot Rods which isn't a criticism. Usual subject matter for songs , fighting ,no money, dole, sex. The latter the basis for one of their more interesting songs ...Screw Ya the opening track of their album The Depressions ( Barn 78) is ahem...well about screwing in the most graphic sense. Stranger than this though is that they went from this sledgehammer approach to the almost thoughtful 24 carat classic Can't Stop Messin With Your Heart / Street Kid ( 1978 Barn) which everyone should own (see Always Searching For Music). The death however of an audience member in a fight at a gig ws the start of a downward spiral that saw them change their name to The DP's, release another album and then split. Stuart Home in 'Cranked Up Really High' reckons they split coz they 'spent their money on drugs and a huge truck'. He also says they were better than and more punk than The Stranglers ...........Well The Depressions had their moments but ...better than the Stranglers ????

Newtown Neurotics - Beggars Can Be Choosers - 1983

This courageous trio from Harlow, Essex, has a great lesson to teach groups: how to infuse a striking mixture of sociopolitical awareness, brains, and down-to-earth, super-intelligent heart (on the sleeve, big time) into modern music. This is post-punk rock & roll with fun, energized appeal, with well-played ensemble work and a string of zippy, kinetic chord changes. One can dance, think, feel, and most of all be inspired to action by listening to such music, and leader Steve Drewett was one of the unsung giants of early-'80s indie Britain. Long before the amateurish riot-grrrl movement, big guy Drewett attacked sexism, gender roles, and domestic violence (from "No Respect": "No man is a 'whore' he invented the name/No man is a 'slut' he feels no shame." From "Agony": "When was the last time you saw a man cry on TV?"). Elsewhere, the remake of the Members' great 1978 single "Solitary Confinement" with Drewett's new words as "Living With Unemployment" might be the high watermark for '80s socialist-tinged, slice-of-life protest songs; it's heartfelt and real. And the competent punk-reggae of "Newtown People" is a scathing condemnation of their little town's bland, suffocating myopia. Les Thugs - Dirty White Race - 1988

French band Les Thugs started in April '83 with five members among which a lead singer Philippe Brix. Rapidly, the band had four musicians (June '83) : the singer and guitarist Eric, the other guitarist Thierry Meanard, the bassist Gerald Chabaud and the drummer Christophe. Pierre-Yves, the third Sourice brother, replaced Gerald after his decision to stop after the 88 tour in Sardinia.

On the contrary to what English-speaking people tend to think, Les Thugs (not The Thugs) aren't basic hooligans. They are the worshippers of Kali, wife of Siva goddess of death, violence, vengeance, and the annihilation of the creation (she is ugly, has four or six hands, and drinks the blood of her victims, surrounded by skulls). The Thugs are a sect since the 12th century in India. They practiceritual murder by strangulation with a silk scarf (to avoid blood). As they have to assassinate for the money, their victims are rich. They were part of the Indian society and paid taxes. The English caught around 1500 of them in 1835. Apparently, some of them are still living in Angers, France.

Dirty White Race was recorded in April 1988 at the Redwood studios London by Alan Scott during 2 days on 24 tracks. Co-production Alan Scott / Les Thugs. They signed with Alternative Tentacles a few years later.

The originals are OK, if somewhat predictable blues-based rave-ups, but the energy and good cheer more than make up for the album's derivative nature. He didn't achieve the fame that his older brother John enjoyed, but Jimmy Lydon was part of his own group for a short period during the late '70s and early '80s, 4 Be 2. Like the early releases of his brother's second major band, Public Image Ltd., 4 Be 2's sound featured art-damaged, dub-influenced post-punk. With revolving door assistance from Graham Wheeland, bassist Martin "Youth" Glover (Killing Joke), guitarists Dreary O'Hoodlum and Jock McDonald (who doubled as the group's manager), and drummers Paddy O'Reilly and Paul "Youngie" Young, 4 Be 2 released a trio of singles, debuting on Island in September of 1979 with One of the Lads. The Frustration single followed in July of 1980 and added backing vocals from Keren Woodward and Sarah Dallin, two future members of Bananarama. Though the sleeves for the singles credit John Lydon with production, Jimmy swore (nudge nudge) that it was his father, not his brother, that did the knob twiddling. The singer opted to leave the group in March of 1981 and the group celebrated the fact with the All of Lads 12," which was issued on Shamrock. After that, the group continued briefly with Jimmy's adolescent brother, Martin, as the vocalist.

RIchard Hell - R.I.P. The ROIR Sessions - 1986

The Richard Hell compilation R.I.P.: The ROIR Sessions was originally released in 1984 as a cassette-only release and was later re-released on CD (different cover, same track listing). R.I.P. collects a total of 14 tracks (most studio, some live) and serves as a solid anthology/greatest-hits compilation. The selections span his career from 1975-1984, from one of his first bands (the legendary Heartbreakers with Johnny Thunders) up until a later incarnation of the Voidoids. The sound quality is consistent for the most part, and the music is rough, raw, and rocking -- in other words, classic Richard Hell. An early version of "Love Comes in Spurts" kicks off the album, and with a Heartbreakers' backup, is proof that Hell would have made a more-than-capable leader of the band (Thunders eventually gained control, effectively ending the original lineup). Also included is the depressed ballad "Betrayal Takes Two," the N.Y. new wave of "I'm Your Man," as well as the saxophone-laced "The Hunter Was Drowned." The only criticism of R.I.P. is the omission of one of Hell's best-known tunes, "Blank Generation," but otherwise it's highly recommended. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

On this date in 1980, Slaughter and The Dogs released their second album, Bite Back. It contained the singles "East Side Of Town" and "I'm The One". Interestingly enough, the album lists the band as Slaughter rather than Slaughter & The Dogs. While recording, the band went through a few lineup changes and the decision as to whether to change the name was up in the air.

Panik was a french punk band from Paris. This is their only mini-LP. They were quite famous in the early 80's french punk scene.

"Histoire drôle" = "Funny story - it is the story of all these people - who laugh when they see me - and who die before their death"

"Festival" = it is about the annual movie festival in Cannes (France) - "Festival of the jesters - Festival of the money"
